The Origin of Golf

Golf is a very old game, in which the players attempt to hit balls into each hole on a golf course while employing the fewest number of strokes. Golf is one of the few ball games that do not require a standardized playing area, this game being played on golf courses. Each of them features a unique design and consists of 9 or 18 holes. In order to be accepted in a golf club, a special pass is needed (for example, in Germany is called Golf Platzreife).

The origin of golf is still unclear: some historians trace the sport back to a Roman game, in which participants used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. The theory asserts that this game spread throughout Britain and Europe as the Romans conquered most of the continent (during the first century B.C.) and eventually evolved into the modern game. Other historians consider that the progenitor of golf is a Chinese game played between the 8th and 14th centuries, which is thought to have been introduced into Europe during the Middle Ages. Another early game that resembled modern golf was known as cambuca in England and chambot in France. Some observers, however, believe that golf descended from the Persian game: chaugán. But according to the most widely accepted theory, the modern golf game originated in Scotland around the 12th century, with shepherds knocking stones into rabbit holes.

The evolution of golf can be explained also by the development of the equipment used to play the game. The equipment needed, encompasses various items like the golf balls, implements designed for striking the balls, devices that aid in the process of playing a stroke, and items that in some way enrich the playing experience, all of them being found in a specialized Golfshop (I will used again the example of Germany, so you can visit the site http://www.golfakademie.com/ for more details about the equipment mentioned above).
